Ffll, 1985 Vo^ppie 7, No. 3 Dr. Joseph W. Alexander Message from the Dean Dear Colleagues: The 1985/86 academic year is off and running with the return of our students. This is always an exciting time for the College as the professional student represents the life blood of any program. It was a pleasure to be able to announce to the returning classes that we would soon begin construction of two modern classrooms and a new veteri¬ nary library. At the present time the Univer¬ sity is seeking an outside architect who will work with our library committee as they put our dreams on paper. We hope to occupy the first classroom on or before Sep¬ tember 1, 1986 and the new library in the spring of 1987. The fall conference for 1985 was a huge success thanks to the efforts of Mack Oyler, Tom Thedford and our con¬ tinuing education committee. Although attendance is not as high as we would like, the program seems to be gaining in popularity. We had three enthusiastic class reunions with the graduates of 1955, 1965, and 1975 returning to the campus. The highlight of the professional program was the first Distinguished Clinician Lecture given by Dr. I. H. May- hew In honor of Dr. Lester Johnson and his years of dedi¬ cated service to the College of Veterinary Medicine and to the citizens of Oklahoma. I hope all of you will make plans to be with us next year. Several small physical plant projects are underway and are in various stages of development. The lawn around the Veteri¬ nary Medicine Building has been resodded and later this fall several new plantings will be placed so as to improve the appearance of this area. We are trying to raise the funds to remodel the student lounge (estimated cost $3,000); the Veteri- ^ Plexus has been published at the request of alumni and friends of the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Comments on this issue and suggestions for future ones (particularly for Newsline, describing Oklahoma State graduates in the news) are encouraged. Contact the Dean's Office, 205 Veterinary Medicine Building — OSU, Stillwater, OK 74078. Phone — 405-624-6648. Dr. Joseph W. Alexander, Dean Eric I. Williams, Editor Printed and distributed by Oklahoma State University as authorized by the Dean of Veterinary Medicine. 1850 copies printed at a cost of $1,037.00 nary Medicine Building lobby (estimated cost $10,000) and to purchase a satellite dish (estimated cost $4,500). This latter item will allow us to have continuing education teleconferences shown in the auditorium of the Veterinary Medicine Building where they can be viewed by students, staff, faculty, veterinar¬ ians, and producers. The College has formed three citizen advisory committees for horses, companion animals, and food and fiber animals. The specific functions of these committees will be to advise our serv¬ ice, research and extension faculty on needs within their respec¬ tive species groups in general and the state of Oklahoma in particular, to help the College set objectives in these areas and assist us in obtaining the necessary public and private finan¬ cial support needed to reach our goals and to act as positive advocates for the College of Veterinary Medicine within the state and region. Many of your clients may now be serving or will be asked to serve on these committees in the future. This effort represents our continuing attempt to better serve the public and the state of Oklahoma. I hope all of you received the mailers on our Compan¬ ion Animal and Equine Giving Plan. This is an important source of research dollars for the College and a practice builder for you. We have a mailer form in the back of this issue of the Plexus. As always thank you for your continuing support of the Col¬ lege of Veterinary Medicine. Sincerely, A/ ^ie^^^^ J. W. Alexander, D.V.M. Dean ALUMNI RECEPTION The College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Reception at the 1986 Western Veterinary Conference will be held in Conference Room 11, Convention Center Foyer, Las Vegas, on Monday, February 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Dean and Mrs. Joseph W. Alexander cordially invite all alumni who will be attending the Las Vegas Conference to join them for an evening of fellowship.
