Abstract	The amount of knowledge in most fields of human endeavor is stifling. This situation has developed since 1950, and there seems to be no abatement at the present time. In active, technical fields, this is a serious problem to the teacher, who must cover all ramifications of a subject in an allotted time. But before a student is able to do much in the time available, he must be given certain fundamental information relevant to the subject. It was with this idea in mind that I have developed these Notes. I began teaching veterinary parasitology to veterinary medical students in 1943. A tremendous amount of time was spent assembling information from various and diverse sources that were not abundant at that time. The students were not satisfied with with only the lecture method of presentation. They wanted the information in its entirety and requested that the Notes be mimeographed for distribution. This request has followed me in four veterinary colleges where I have tried to disseminate up-to-date and complete information in the various phases of veterinary parasitology. Sections of the Notes have been revised periodically when new information was sufficient to demand a revision and time permitted. When the Notes were initiated, the 1942 Yearbook of Agriculture, entitled Keeping Livestock Healthy, and other United States Government publications,including Farmer's Bulletins, were used as a nucleus of information in most subjects pertaining to veterinary parasitology. The material for subsequent revisions of the Notes has been gleaned from many sources. Comprehensive textbooks in parasitology and veterinary parasitology and other volumes on specialized subjects have been utilized and checked against one another for agreement on general basic information. Volumes concerned with general and human parasitology also have been used. Additional information has been secured from diagnostic work, veterinary clinics, former students in clinical practice, my own published and unpublished research, original research papers by others in numerous journals, various U.S. Government publications, and correspondence with certain specialists on specific subjects. As a result, most aspects of veterinary parasitology have been covered that are essential for a veterinary student, whether he goes into practice, research, government, or other professional work. The Notes are concerned almost exclusively with parasites that have been encountered in the Unite d States. For this reason more detailed information could be i n cluded. Some therapeutic materials included in the Notes have been used for years. In recent years the accelerated rate of compounding new materials and their formulations for methods of use, their extensive multiplication under proprietary names , the frequent changes in their recommended usage, and the recent introduction of mandatory licensing under a r egistered number by U.S. Government agencies for specified uses h ave created temporary havoc in recommending and presc ribing treatments. During my later years in veterinary medical teaching, the students have been more persistent in their requests for the Notes. Therefore the Notes have been duplicated periodically in mimeog raphed form for teaching my classes, but all requests from students at other veterinary.colleges have been refused. The re are no illustrations in the Notes. If this book is used by others to teach veterinary parasitology, it is as sumed that laboratory periods would be included in the course and that students would have an opportunity to see appropriate specimens. If this is impossible, the book Diagnosis of Veterinary Parasitisms, by J. H. Whitlock, is pictorial and would be an important adjunct. For most students ente ring veterinary parasitology, this course is their first encounter with this subject, and it is an entirely new phase of l earning to them. The Notes have been organized in certain groupings for simplification and avoidance of monotony. I generally begin the series of courses, usually two, by explaining the importance of these courses, their place in the cur riculum, their value and use. This is follow ed with a discussion of the basic principle s of taxonomy - information which may be found in most biological texts. Before species of parasites in any of the m a jor g roups (such as a rachnids, ins ects, proto zo a , and nematode s) are discussed, I detail the general basic structure and the basic life cycles of these organisms- information which may be secured from m ost textbooks in biology or entomology. Only limited information of this kind is found in the Note s. Then I continue with the g r oups of external parasites because students are more familiar with these organisms, and their structure and life cycles are not as complicated as those of inte rna l parasites. It will be noted that there is a section on the parasites of dogs and cats and a section on poultry parasites. Variation in structure and life cycle in some of the taxonomic groups, such as tapeworms, ascarids, and strongyles of the intestine, including hookworms, is very dive rg ent. Therefore, the two sections have b een isolated to minimize confusion for the student. By studying the nematodes in the r esp ect ive groups in the l a rge domestic m ammals first, the number of variations and peculiarities dealt with i nitially is reduced; and then by returning to species in comparable groups that infect dogs and cats or poultry, the r esults in teaching are much better. By doing this one merely a dds seve r a l more species in each of the groups and also insures a review of and comparison with species with which the student is already familiar. Requests for publication of these Notes in book form have been received for a number of years. After trying to keep up with the literature to maintain my Notes up-to-date, I am of the opinion that it is really not worthwhile to publish them in an expensive textbook form because the science is so active, the increase and changes in information are many and sometimes quite drastic. It is more economical for students to have them in an inexpensive form of publication to which new Notes by them or revised sections by the writer may be added. Although I am far from satisfied with the form in which the Notes must be published, students, veterinarians, and teachers have been persistent in their desire to have them available; for this reason I have yielded to their wishes.
