| About the Farm | The Cabin Creek Farm was designated an Oklahoma Centennial Farm in 1992. The property has been occupied by a member of the Stiles family for over 100 years, includes the original 145 and 10/100 acres, and has major crops of wheat and rye grass along with cattle. Historically the farm had operated as a dairy and had been known as the Cabin Creek Dairy serving Cushing and the surrounding area. |
| Abstract | Current owners of Cabin Creek Farms are Darrell Stiles and Nancy Stiles Chipukites, great-grandchildren of original homesteaders; Cushing, Oklahoma; great grandparents made the run, coming from Kansas; homesteaded in the run of 1891; Cabin Creek runs through the property; Cabin Creek dairy; 160 acres originally; additional acreage; original homesteader had six or seven children; squatters camp near Stillwater; land ownership dispute with a sooner; oldest of the children graduated from Oklahoma Agricultural & Mechanical College and did doctoral work at Georgetown University; state took part of the land for State Highway 33; land passed down to grandfather, then to their father (Lee Roy Stiles), to them; family trust; homesteaders worked for the Sac and Fox Indians clearing land; initially grew beans and cotton; operated dairy from 1921 into the 1970; grandfather supplemented income as a deputy sheriff for Payne County; grandparents had six children; parents took over dairy in 1946; parents had four children; parents had dairy until 1970; granary; butchering; smokehouse and cellar; cistern; lumber from Guthrie; Dalton brothers; chores; horses and mules; childhood; thrashing crews; first tractor; grain shocks; games; swimming; Laundromat; winter; Christmas Eve; calf fries; bath time and wash tubs; terracing; water storage tank; ice; farmhouse; multi-generations under one roof; snapping green beans; Sunday school; school days; Cottonwood School; Hillside Elementary; 4-H and FFA; Darrell, Nancy, and their father graduated from Oklahoma State University; college days; sheep; county fair; state fair; discipline; fences; hired help; hay bales; milking machines; rural water; future for the farm; beef cattle. |
