| Abstract | Dorothy (Conaghan) Chiles is among the few women who have served in the Oklahoma state legislature; elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in a Special Election in May 1973 to fill the seat vacated by her husband after his untimely death, served through 1986. She was born and reared in Oklahoma City; attended the University of Oklahoma where she met her first husband, Brian Conaghan; moved to Tonkawa and started a family; husband was in the drill bit business; being a member of the Young Republicans; vice-chairman for the Kay County Republicans; helping husband campaign for House District 38; husbands 11 years of legislative service; husband battling leukemia; spending time at the Capitol helping husband; decision to run for the seat; campaigning; children and campaigning; child care while serving; supporting bills related to health and to women; bill to make selling gold paint to people under a certain age illegal; car insurance bill; Equal Rights Amendment (ERA); committee work; McAlester prison riot; hazardous waste site; living arrangements while serving; assistant minority floor leader; life after the legislature; married Bob Chiles; Health Planning Commission; Shirley Bellmon; other women legislators; gender; and lobbyists. |

| Description | Dorothy Conaghan Chiles was interviewed July 2, 2007 as part of the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Oral History Project. Mrs. Chiles (Conaghan while serving) was elected in 1973, through a Special Election, to the Oklahoma House of Representatives and served through 1986. She represented House District 38 and was a member of the Republican Party. Mrs. Chiles shares her memories of family life in Tonkawa, campaigning, and her path to the Capitol. Health insurance, issues pertaining to women, restrictions on the sale of gold paint to minors, and car insurance are some of the legislative issues discussed. |
