| Abstract | Daisy Lawler is among the few women who have served in the Oklahoma state legislature; elected to the Senate in 2002, served through 2006; growing up on her parents dairy farm; beginning school at the age of five; marrying, having children, and pursuing a degree in elementary education; teaching first grade for over twenty-five years in a rural school; retiring after twenty-eight years of teaching; becoming interested in politics; running a campaign against an incumbent; receiving guidance from other legislators; feelings about working in the Capitol; campaigning on issues of education, roads and bridges, high cost of medications, nutrition sites for senior citizens, and the prison system; presenting certificates of completion to women in the Mabel Bassett facility; presenting a bill to implement a phonics reading program in prisons; chairing and vice-chairing committees; being the first woman Chair of Agriculture; passing legislation to build a new agricultural laboratory and to expand the diagnostic lab at Oklahoma State University; sponsoring a bill to build a free standing hospice house; living in a hotel and attending evening events during sessions; socializing with women legislators and response of men; following the dress code, being cool in the chamber, wearing high heels; having an office in the Capitol; looking ahead to writing a book having to do with mental health; explaining the various costs of campaigning and the importance of having family support; desiring to be remembered as someone who worked hard to put forth legislation that would help the citizens of Oklahoma; correcting a mistake in a bill; getting things finished the last day of the session and looking ahead to summer campaigning; sharing interest in politics with husband and assisting him with his campaign; having women more involved in her campaign; researching and support staff; organizing for a typical day; implement a junior senator program; passing legislation to give a witness the same protection as victim, obtaining a customers approval before adding costly items to an insurance policy, changing the strip annexation; working on an unsuccessful eminent domain bill; presenting a bill on the floor as a freshman; being a woman legislator; rethinking, amending, and adding to a bill; the evolution of the tort reform bill, also referred to as the McDonald bill; timing of a proposed bill. |

| Description | Daisy Lawler was interviewed January 10, 2007 as part of the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Project. Mrs. Lawler was elected to the Oklahoma Senate in 2002 and served through 2006. Mrs. Lawler held the Senate District 24 seat and was a member of the Democrat Party. She was the first woman Chair of the Agriculture committee. She discusses sharing her interest in politics with her husband, campaigning on such issues as education and the high cost of medications, and presenting a bill to implement a phonics reading program in prisons. |
