| Abstract | Kathleen Wilcoxson is among the few women who have served in the Oklahoma state legislature; elected to the Senate in 1996, served through 2008; born in Lawton, Oklahoma and grew up in Owasso; small, rural community; bachelors degree in elementary education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University; masters and doctorate degree in education from Oklahoma State University; wrote a letter to Henry Bellmon when he became governor; deciding to run for seat previously held by Helen Cole; campaigning and husband as campaign manager; slogan, Preparing for the future today; election night; swearing in day; initiation to the senate floor; bills focused on education; the initiation to the Senator floor; committee work; for 10 years was in the minority party; bi-partisanship; lone republican woman in the senate; no gender on the senate floor; conservative political philosophy; theres always food; developing bills; not a 40-hour week; advice for women considering public office; legislation to stop drown nights; impact of dropping out of school; outworking opponents; and living what she believes. |

| Description | Kathleen Wilcoxson was interviewed October 22, 2007 as part of the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Oral History Project. Mrs. Wilcoxson was elected to the Oklahoma Senate in 1996 and served through 2008. She held the Senate District 45 seat and was a member of the Republican Party. Mrs. Wilcoxson recalls her initial interest in politics as a young child writing to Governor Henry Bellmon, talks about campaigning, and shares her memories of her first years in the legislature. She also discusses some of her legislative efforts such as changing the school dropout laws. |
