| Abstract | Odilia Dank is among the few women who have served in the Oklahoma state legislature; elected to the House of Representatives in 1994, served through 2006; born in Cleveland, Ohio, moved to Oklahoma at the age of 2; grew up on the northeast side of Oklahoma City; loved social studies and education; dad was a radiologist; mother had been a dentist; earned bachelors degree from Randolph-Macon Womens College in Virginia; earned masters in education from the University of Oklahoma; taught for eight years then became a counselor; father was patriotic and interested in politics; decision to run for seat vacated by Mary Fallin; served in the minority party for ten years; last two years served in the first republican majority since 1921; conservative; elected vice-chairman of the Oklahoma State Republican Party; chairman of the House Education Committee; being one of only a few women in the legislature; campaign slogan, Bank on Dank; husband as campaign manager; campaigning; primary and run-off; first election night and winning by 52 votes; other elections; swearing in day; tremendous amount of reading; typical day; not having a copy of a bill on the day it was to be heard and trying to change the House rules; Supreme Court challenge; Education Committee; Revenue and Taxation Committee; pushing for parental notification in regards to the health and well being of children and the unborn; ad valorem tax freeze did not pass the Senate; role models and mentors; Murrah Building bombing; thoughts for women considering running for office; husband campaigning for her vacated seat; transitioning from representative to the wife of a representative; philosophy and different environments at the Capitol; thoughts on the controversial vote to send the gambling bill to the people to vote on; views self as a citizen legislator; differences in gender networking; saw a marked difference in attitudes toward women serving over the 12 years; presenting first bill; and life after the legislature. |

| Description | Odilia Dank was interviewed October 31, 2007 as part of the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Oral History Project. Mrs. Dank was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 1994 and served through 2006. She represented House District 85 and was a member of the Republican Party. Mrs. Dank talks about her career in education, serving in the minority party for 10 of 12 years in the House, and being fully engaged in the House Education Committee. She also discusses issues she supported such as ensuring legislators have the opportunity to read a bill before voting on it and providing parental notification in regards to the health and well-being of children and the unborn. |
