| Abstract | Skye McNiel is among the few women who have served in the Oklahoma state legislature; elected to the House of Representatives in 2006; born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma; family owns and operates a livestock auction; rural way of life; work with animals, cattle; raised like a boy to think that I could do anything a boy could do; graduated from Oklahoma State University with a double major in Ag Communications and Animal Science; developing interest in political arena; agricultural intern for the Ag Committee in the House and the Senate; deciding to run; campaigning; female opponent; election day; won by about 250 votes; driving down Lincoln Boulevard and seeing the dome; swearing in day; staying connected to constituents; commuting from Bristow during session; family; involved with some Department of Human Services issues; passionate about rural Oklahoma; vice-chairman of the Natural Resources Committee; argument between rural Oklahoma and urban Oklahoma over water issues; can co-exist; presenting bills on the floor; a bill providing rural economic money back into rural Oklahoma; being rural more of an issue than being a woman; role models; knocking doors, dogs, and Fig Newtons; grandparents raising grandchildren; freshman year; working with a campaign consultant; decorating office with items from home; on the Social Services Sub-Committee and the Aerospace and Technology Sub-Committee, and the Energy Sub-Committee; is an Assistant Majority Whip; senior women in caucus; thoughts on being a woman; and serving with young children in the home. |

| Description | Skye McNiel was interviewed November 13, 2007 as part of the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Oral History Project. Mrs. McNiel was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 2006 and is currently serving. She represents House District 29 and is a member of the Republican Party. Mrs. McNiel shares stories about growing up in and continuing to work in the family business including working side by side with her mother and grandmother. She discusses her philosophy on serving in the legislature and about some of her efforts in support of the rural way of life. |
