| Abstract | Judy Eason McIntyre is among the few women who have served in the Oklahoma state legislature; elected to the House of Representatives in 2004 then elected to the Senate in 2004; wonderful childhood; oldest of four, three girls and one boy; father is from Oklahoma City, mother from Sapulpa; father in the army in WWII; grew up in a segregated Tulsa; on the inner-city student council, the inner-city orchestra; was in Washington and heard Martin Luther Kings I have a dream speech ; entered the University of Oklahoma in 1963 during the civil rights movement; earned a degree in social work in 1967; earned masters in social work from the University of Oklahoma in 1979; infected with the fight of anger; got a job in 1967 with DHS; took awhile a to understand. You dont judge people by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character; woman warrior; kept up with national events in high school; interest in politics came when met future husband who was interested in politics; husband was elected to the House of Representatives; divorced in 1980; she ran for a city-wide school board seat and won; a legislative wife for eleven years; learned to love politics while married; on the school board for about sixteen years; decision to always do own homework and not be afraid to ask the hard questions; retired from DHS after thirty-one years; decision to run for a House seat in 2002; in 2004 ran for and won open Senate seat; diagnosed with breast cancer; personal philosophy; campaigns hard and works hard; constituents; inclusive; decision to change from House to Senate; swearing in day; living arrangements during session; Harry the dog; the boys club; serving the people, working in the Capitol; term limits; co-chair of Education Committee; breast cancer shell bill; improving the quality of life; presenting first bill; Department of Corrections; appointed to the Speakers leadership team as a freshman; gender; women and elected office. |

| Description | Judy Eason McIntyre was interviewed November 19, 2007 as part of the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Oral History Project. Ms. Eason McIntyre was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 2003 and served through 2004 at which time she was elected to the Oklahoma Senate and served through 2012. She represented House District 73 and held the Senate District 11 seat. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Ms. Eason McIntyre shares her memories of growing up in a supportive family where education was stressed, life during segregation, and life during the civil rights movement. She further discusses how she became interested in politics and some of the issues close to her heart such as breast cancer and improving the quality of life in Oklahoma. |
