| Abstract | Susan Paddack is among the few women who have served in the Oklahoma state legislature; elected to the Senate in 2004; grew up in Texas; one sister; dad was a telephone lineman for General Telephone Company; grew up with the water; was a Girl Scout; sophomore year of high school moved to Brownfield, Texas where she met Gary Paddack; college at the University of Colorado; nickname in college was Shake for Shake n Bake; earned degree, moved back to Texas, taught school, married in 1975; moved around with husband while he was in medical school; outdoor activities; Indian Health Service; moved to Oklahoma in 1980; Carl Albert Indian Hospital in Ada, Oklahoma; interest in politics and thoughts on serving; active in the Medical Association political action committee and in the National Medical Alliance Group; health care issues; developing a skill set; reads a lot and keeps abreast of current events; ran for office because cared about the issues; 2004 was the first year term limits were in place, a third of the legislature would leave; deciding to run; work in collaboration and be a consensus builder; what it means to be in a democracy; campaign; slogan, Shell fight for us; election night; primary, run-off, general; swearing in day; developing a routine; bill called Rx for Oklahoma; passion areas are education and health care bills; Caitlins law; Healthcare Workforce Resources Center; shared leadership in committees; typical day really varies; visitors; Billie Jean Floyd, mentor and role model; the Five Amigos, freshmen class of democrats; never about the gender, always about credibility; in three sessions has passed over thirty bills; ran a water bill; economic prosperity; Project Ignition; campaign story; and advice for women considering running for the legislature. |

| Description | Susan Paddack was interviewed November 27, 2007 as part of the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Oral History Project. Mrs. Paddack was elected to the Oklahoma Senate in 2004 and is currently serving. She holds the Senate District 13 seat and is a member of the Democratic Party. Mrs. Paddack describes the various steps she took in developing the skill set she uses as she serves her constituents. She also discusses some of her legislation such as Rx for Oklahoma and Caitlins law. |
