| Abstract | Debbe Leftwich is among the few women who have served in the Oklahoma state legislature; elected to the Senate in a special election in 2003; was born in Chandler, Oklahoma; grew up the small town of Wellston; one brother went to Oklahoma Baptist University for three semesters; ran for student government in high school; developing an interest in politics; voting for the first time; campaigned for David Boren for governor; husband ran for and won election to a House of Representative seat and later to a Senate seat; husband served a total of 20 years; husband passed away in 2003 and she ran for the Senate seat in a special election; no opponent in 2006; footprint on campaign sign; election day; swearing in day; typical day during session; sponsoring a House bill on cancer; committee work; gender; advice for women considering running for election; campaign funding; women legislators; graduated drivers license for teenagers; trucking bill; future legislation; domestic violence; cancer caucus; Guthrie and statehood; Murrah Building bombing; and courage and conviction. |

| Description | Debbe Leftwich was interviewed November 30, 2007 as part of the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Oral History Project. Mrs. Leftwich was elected to the Oklahoma Senate in 2003 and served through 2010. She held the Senate District 44 seat and is a member of the Democratic Party. Mrs. Leftwich presents the development of her interest in the political arena and some of the circumstances surrounding the 2003 special election. She also discusses some of her past legislative efforts such as creating a graduated drivers license for teenagers and her interest in the issue of domestic violence. |
