| Abstract | Helen Arnold is among the few women who have served in the Oklahoma state legislature; elected to the House of Representatives in 1976 and served through 1982; born in Marysville, Kansas; grandfather homesteaded in Kansas; Depression; dust storm; father was very interested in politics; grandfather was mayor; graduated from Kansas State University, major was history and government/political science; family history; moved around with husband who was a geophysicist; deciding to move to Oklahoma in 1961; had moved 33 times; ERA; League of Women Voters of Oklahoma; deciding to run for the legislature; had a run-off then won the general; 1978 election; gender; election night; swearing in day; party politics; nurse midwife bill; secretary used to say, Helen is the amendment queen of the Legislature; office; reading bills; Mouth of the House; committee assignments; Alene Baker; life after the legislature; appointed a tag agent; named by Governor Henry Bellmon to the Director of the Office of Public Affairs; republican governor with a democrat House and Senate; death penalty; advice for women considering running for the legislature; and thoughts on term limits. |

| Description | Helen Arnold was interviewed January 9, 2008 as part of the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Oral History Project. Mrs. Arnold was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 1976 and served through 1982. She represented House District 71 and was a member of the Republican Party. Mrs. Arnold shares her memories of growing up in the Depression years and provides some family background. She also discusses term limits, the nurse midwife bill, and life after the legislature. |
