| Abstract | Nancy (Virtue) Lewis is among the few women who have served in the Oklahoma legislature; elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 1982, served through 1986; teaching high school government; being a lobbyist; campaigning activities; changing offices in the Capitol; female friend as campaign manager; describing her district; family and friends help with campaign; lone female freshman; shepherding the Education committee; interacting with women legislators; dressing for climate in the chamber; learning the ropes; reading bills and preparing for debates; educational background; marrying a legislator; supporting womens and childrens issues; promoting child health care; sponsoring legislation restricting sale of alcohol and smokeless tobacco among children; establishing a field bureau for constituent access; serving with Carolyn Thompson Taylor; researching, carrying and presenting bills; husband becoming Speaker of the House; working towards electing the first woman Speaker in the House; opposing members; pursuing a doctorate in education; choosing campaign colors; life after leaving office; mentoring; choosing the House over the Senate; transferring lobbying skills to sponsoring a bill; role in preparing facilities and personnel for the Schusterman Campus; introducing son, Reed. |

| Description | Nancy Virtue Lewis was interviewed March 26, 2007 as part of the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Oral History Project. Mrs. Lewis (Virtue while serving) was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 1982 and served through 1986. She represented House District 53 and was a member of the Democratic Party. Legislation she sponsored restricting the sale of alcohol and smokeless tobacco among children is discussed along with the major role she played, after leaving the legislature, in developing what is now the University of Oklahoma- Schusterman Campus. |
