| Abstract | Mrs. Lamar Looney, born Mirabeau Lamar Cole, is Oklahomas first female state senator; elected to the Senate in 1920 and served through 1928; her great-granddaughter, Patricia Dennis talks about her great-grandmother; born in Talladega, Alabama in 1871; family moved to Texas; met and married Doc Tourney Looney; moved to Hollis Oklahoma; had six children, one died in infancy; lost husband when youngest son was 10; postmistress of Hollis; taught organ lessons; allotments and acquiring a patent for the land; built a soddy; sold organ for mules; put in a crop; after five years moved back to town; county clerk; ran for senate and was seated in 1920; heart disease; for universal suffrage; state laws would not allow her to be lieutenant governor; ran for the United States Senate and lost; died in 1935; background on her children; became a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association; pioneer life; and the portrait at the Capitol. |
